Parasite Control

Fleas and ticks can be a very serious problem for pets and pet parents as well. We see skin problems related to flea bites all year-round, but it usually increase during the summer and fall seasons, when we see more cases of flea dermatitis during this time of the year. Itching and scratching pets is the main sign of a flea problem. While some cases can be relatively mild, most pets will develop flea allergy dermatitis, when skin become extremely itchy and intensive scratching will contribute to hair loss and skin infections.

Preventing Parasite Infections

Veterinary medicine made noticeable advances in prevention and control of fleas and ticks, especially for small animals, such as dogs and cats. In order to prevent parasite infection all dogs and cats should be de-wormed for at least four times a year. Ticks are equally dangerous to fleas. Their saliva causes irritation and possible infection at the site where they bite or attach to the pet’s skin. Pets, especially dogs can have large flea and/or tick infestations, that will cause anemia, infectious dermatitis, weight loss, and even death.

One Time Doesn’t Help

In order to protect our pets from fleas and ticks we need to keep them on flea and tick medication all year-round, since flea and tick re-infestation can occur throughout the year. In our hospital we offer several spot-on flea and tick products, such as Capstar, Frontline, Advantage, Revolution, and Seresto flea and tick collar, that are very effective and meet specific needs of your pet.

Spot-on and Collar Products

Many insecticidal products are available in the form of spot-on or collar. With Spot-on products you will need to apply small volume of liquid to a dog or cat skin between shoulder blades or the neck. Spot-on products will protect your pets for up to 1 month, and can be very effective. Flea and Tick Collar also provide adequate protection, and will last up to 6 months. It’s in the pet’s interest to take action against fleas and ticks ASAP, to keep our pets safe.
