Diagnostics & Imaging

When might radiographs be necessary?

Radiographs are recommended based on the following symptoms: 

  • Abdominal Radiographs 
    • Anorexia
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea 
    • Bloating 
    • Abdominal pain 
  • Chest Radiographs 
    • Coughing
    • Sneezing
    • Labored breathing 
    • Exercise intolerance 
  • Orthopedic Radiographs 
    • Lameness
    • Stiffness 
    • Joint swelling 
    • Orthopedic pain 
    • Difficulty standing up, running, jumping 

When might ultrasonography be necessary?

Ultrasounds are a diagnostic tool used to rule out the following diagnoses:

Abdominal Ultrasounds are recommended when the following are suspected 

  • Intestinal Obstruction 
  • Chronic Enteropathy 
  • Gastrointestinal Tumors 
  • Pancreatitis or Pancreatic Tumors 
  • Liver disease, based on abnormal radiographs or blood values 
  • Abdominal effusion 
  • …and more 

 

Urogenital Ultrasounds are recommended when the following are suspected 

  • Ovarian pathologies 
  • Uterine pathologies 
  • Gestation 
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Urinary obstruction, tumor or infection 
  • Bladder stones, based on abnormal radiographs or urine values 
  • Kidney disease, based on abnormal radiographs or blood/urine values 
  • Kidney stones, based on abnormal radiographs 
  • …and more

Echocardiograms are recommended when heart disease is suspected based on auscultation, blood work, or radiographs.

In most cases, imaging is done at the time of your appointment. If imaging is required, please note that it may require up to an hour to complete.

Orthopedic Radiographic studies typically require your pet to be sedated to ensure they remain as comfortable as possible during the acquisition. By sedating, we are able to capture higher quality radiographs while preventing any stress and/or discomfort. 

Ultrasounds are performed the day of based on urgency. Typically, ultrasounds must be scheduled.

Abdominal ultrasounds require your pet to be fasted, do not feed your pet the morning of their appointment. 

Cardiac and Abdominal ultrasounds typically take one to two hours and may require sedation. 

If sedation is needed, we usually recommend dropping off your pet as it will take over an hour.
